This is The Way

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice
behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." Isaiah 30:21

Have you ever faced a time when you had to make an important decision? Have you  ever faced a time when you just didn't know what to do? Maybe it was whether or  not you wanted to do soccer or gymnastics. Maybe it was whether you wanted to go on a trip or not. Maybe it was whether you should do homework or hang out with your friends.

Although many of your parents make big decisions for you, as you get older, you will need to make decisions on your own. When that time comes, know that God is with you. God is with your parents as they make big decisions, and God will be with you as you start to make big decisions.

What attitude should we have as we make these decisions?

It's simple! We trust in God to know that He has made the decisions for us. We spend time with Him so that we can hear Him say "This is the way; walk in it."  Although we may not hear His voice booming from the sky, we can know in our  hearts that the right decision is a decision to simply follow Him in whatever we do. Sometimes there isn't a right or wrong decision, but rather a call from God to trust Him in whatever decision we make.

Take time to read the Bible so you know what standards God has and take time to pray to Him so that He can set your heart straight as you make decisions. Rely on Him completely!

Until next time,

The words of Agur

"Two things I ask of you, O  Lord;
do not refuse me before I die;
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, 'Who is the Lord?
Or I may become poor and steal and so
dishonor the name of my God."
Proverbs 30: 8-9

As I was reading through the book of Proverbs, these two verses stuck out to me greatly. Here we see that Agur, an oracle, has a content attitude. He only asks for two things:

1) That God would keep falsehoods and lies far away from him so that he would not be refused before he dies
2) That God would give him only what he needs

So what do those two requests mean? What is Agur really trying to say? What does it mean for us?

1) Agur acknowledges that he can be separated from God if he starts to believe in "falsehoods and lies." For us, "falsehoods and lies" might be lies that society tells us to be true. For example, society tells us that to be successful, we must reach the highest position in our job, make the most money, and live for ourselves. Friends may tell us that the only way to be a friend is to do everything that our friends want, even if it hurts us or goes against our morals. Television might tell us that to be desirable, we have to wear the right clothes and look a certain way. All of those are falsehoods and lies that can keep us from God. As I've encouraged before, as we continue to spend time with God in our lives and read His Word, we can sort through what is a lie and what is truth. The more we get to know the God of Truth, the more we can determine what lies we're being told.

2) Agur recognizes that when things are going well for him, he has a tendency to believe that he has accomplished all the good things in his life and that he has the ability to control whether or not good or bad things happen in his life. Agur realizes that this isn't true! God is actually the one who gives any good thing to us and is the only person who can give good things. We have not earned any good thing in our life. That's why Agur asks that God not give him too much in case Agur forgets who has given him those blessings. Further, Agur also realizes that he also has a tendency to blame God for all the bad things in his life and is prone to sinning when his life is in a bad situation. For us, this might be how we blame other people for why we are in debt, or that it was our brother or sister who made us hit them. Agur asks that God give him just enough so that he would not feel as if he needed to sin to survive, which would dishonor God.

Do you have enough courage and faith to ask God to do the same in your life? Are you willing to ask God to protect you from living a life away from Him? Are you willing to ask Him to give you just what you need--no more, no less?

Examine your heart to see if you struggle with these requests. If so, ask God to allow you to repent of sin that is keeping you from having a content heart and that He would give you a heart ready to ask these of Him.

Until next time,

Sharing the Gospel

I am naturally a non-confrontational person. Because I like to please people, I don't like to bring up issues. That may seem weird to some people because I am pretty blunt sometimes but that process comes after a lot of prayer and alignment with Scripture. Either that or I mess up royally and I have an angry burst so then issues come out...eek.

I think it's funny on God's part that I am a Christian because Christianity is probably one of if not THE most offensive religions on earth. Especially because I have been a part of higher education for the past five years, I am in a world where it is even more offensive to be a Christian because it "does not align with science."

This is an area that brings me much fear because I do not personally know all of the science behind everything to possibly debate with one who is steeped in scientific knowledge about how God exists, if He exists, or why He exists. I know that my arguments are usually unacceptable because mine are built off of the Bible, and I still need to grow in bridging science and faith.

It's really hard to see on the internet all the different types of discussions (rather judgmental debates) because it creates a greater fear in me to share my faith because I am scared someone is going to angrily throw something in my face and make me cry haha. Unfortunately this may be largely due to the fact that this has happened to me, so I still fear that now. As much as I have peacefully shared my faith with people who have been receptive to at least hearing me without yelling at me--the fear is still there, and it holds me back from sharing.

However, Christians can have the faith and comfort in knowing that only through Jesus can there be true salvation. We must take an active role in sharing about Jesus' death to our family and friends and strangers we see because we do not know how God will use our words, but we can also not fear sharing our faith because we know that Jesus is the one who is alive and has a plan.

1 Corinthians 3:6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.

Triumphal Entry

Imagine making all A's in your class and becoming class president. Your teacher is so proud of you so she asks you to stand up in front of everyone so that all of your classmates can clap their hands for you. But then, the next week, your teacher refuses to let you even be a part of the class, makes you sit in the corner of the room on display and away from everyone else. Everyone who you thought was your friend all of a sudden makes jokes about you, calls you names, won't play with you at recess, or sit near you during lunch.

That is exactly what happened to Jesus years ago--but a little differently of course. This week is what many people consider Holy Week. It is the week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday was the day when Jesus came into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, and everyone praised Him as their King. They used palms to fan in the air to show Him how much they were excited for Him to arrive! Within only ONE week, Jesus was nailed to the cross by the exact people who--a week earlier-- had been excited for Him to arrive. They called him names, refused to be near Him, and hated Him.
Picture
Did you know that Jesus knew all of that was going to happen? Did you know that He knew that everyone would first love Him and then hate Him?

He knew that He would be nailed to the cross and hated by so many people, and yet He CHOSE to continue with God's plan for Him to die on the cross. He did this because He loves us so much that He was willing to be hated by the world, to be separated from any source of love, goodness, or kindness--all for our sake. He knew that only a perfect human could be a sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the world, and so He knew He had to be hated and die on the cross to save the rest of us.

This Easter, don't forget that it's not about Easter bunnies, chocolate eggs, or Easter egg hunts. It's all about a God who came down to the world, to face all the struggles that we as humans now face, but that we no longer have to fear because He has bridged the gap for us to know God our Father.

Until next time,
